A'ight Danny boy. Call it overdone, but I absolutely love "1984." Plus being the intelligent, humorous person that you are, I'm sure you would enjoy "Catch-22."
Leaning more to the fantasy side, I would suggest Through Wolf's Eyes and the rest of that series by Jane Lindskold and Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams. Lindskold's series, from what I have read of it, goes very in-depth into politics and raises questions of how the wild can survive, and Tailchaser's Song, though it doesn't have a series attached, gives a very different view on the life of animals, specifically cats, and the way their world and, yes, their religion, interacts with the world. I'm desperatly in love with both.

Well I know this book is a little elementary, but "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" By Maya Angelou is the best book I've ever read!

Try "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket. Despite the titles, they're hilarious.
